One of the most difficult choices in anyPokemongame is selecting your starter Pokemon. What happens to the unchosen starter in each game depends on the entry you’re playing. In some cases, they get left behind in the lab, while in others, they go with your friendly rival with a destiny of being stomped during every encounter.
Ironically enough, the Grass-types are often left behind in comparison to the other choices. The real question, though, is just how sad you are making these Pokemon by not choosing them? Would they be salty if they didn’t get picked? Or was it the best thing that could happen to them?
9Chespin
Always Smiling For The Crowd
Chespin is the happiest Pokemon alive. This thing is always smiling and showing off its pearly white buck teeth. There is simply nothing that would make this Pokemon sad, even if you leave it behind at the lab.
Since Froakie is so popular, Chespin will often find itself being picked by your rival for being strong against theWater-type starter. This means Chespin has nothing to worry about, even if it means it will end up losing to you in battle multiple times by the end of the adventure.
8Treecko
Make Treecko Happy Now Or Pay Later
Treeko gives off the vibe that it would get visibly angry or irritated if you don’t pick it. Reptiles have feelings too, and being left behind at the lab might make it angry. This isn’t the type of Pokemon to huddle in the corner and cry about it.
In fact, in thePokemon spinoff series, Grovyle is known to mess with time travel. So the next time you get to choose your Hoenn starters, the best course of action is to make Treecko happy by picking it before it grows up resentful.
7Turtwig
What Goes On In That Little Head?
If any Pokemon would be sad on the inside but generally keep things light, it would be Turtwig. Just one look at that goofy face, and you’d think it would be cool with not getting chosen. It’s not, but this tough little Pokemon will just tank through the pain.
Turtwig won’t be able to go on an adventure, become a champion Pokemon, or even meet the deities of time and space. It even misses out on meeting the Pokemon equivalent of God. Turtwig has the most to lose by not getting chosen. But hey, it’s just a goofy-looking turtle, right?
6Snivy
Uptight
Snivy is the kind of starter Pokemon that gives off a pompous vibe. You don’t choose it as your partner, but rather, Snivy decides whether or not you are good enough to train it. Perhaps it is because it always has its nose pointed up high.
Despite this, Snivy has feelings too, and it would be the kind of Pokemon to mask its sadness by simply making it look like you were never good enough to be its trainer. So even if it looks a little pretentious or uptight, give Snivy a chance.
5Rowlet
Watch Your Back If You Make This Pokemon Sad
Rowlett looks cute now, but when it fully evolves, it will be able to snipe you from whatever distance it wants to. You will never see it coming when it has you in its sights. That’s why you must choose Rowlett as your starter in the Alola region.
Take Rowlet surfing, give it some pets, and practice your dances to perform Z Moves together. The more you bond with Rowlet the less likely it will seek out revenge later on. If you decide to leave it behind, you’d better hope you’ve built up a legendary team to protect you.
4Grookey
Grookey would definitely be sad if you didn’t pick it as your starter. It would be even sadder if your friendly rival didn’t pick it as theirs either. After being left in the lab all alone, Grookey would most likely pour its entire soul into playing its drums.
This Grookey might not have the most emo second evolution like Scorbunny or Sobble, but it would turn its pain into art through music. Just don’t come crying back to Grookey when its career as a drummer makes it famous. You had your chance to make it happy.
3Sprigatito
Like all cats, it can be quite difficult to get a read on Sprigattito’s emotions. Is it sad that you didn’t pick it? Is it mad at being left behind or does it simply not care as long as it has a place to bathe in the sun? Nah, this cat will not stop scratching at your door if you choose someone else.
Sprigatito wants you to feed it some canned Magikarp, not cuddle up with the other starter Pokemon. Like all cats, it will eventually find a way out on its own and track you down. It will keep up with the sad meows until you finally give in and adopt it.
2Chikorita
Salty That They Didn’t Get Picked
Chikorita looks like the type of Pokemon that would get sad on the inside if not picked to be your starter Pokemon, yet displays it as saltiness. After all, your choice gets to go on this grand adventure. However, not being chosen runs the risk of getting stolen by Silver.
In a universe where you choose Totodile, Chikorita gets stolen and perhaps becomes a rival to your starter Pokemon for this reason. You never know what’s behind those little red eyes. Yet if Cyndaquil is chosen, Chikorita will be left in the ball all alone.
1Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur Keeps Getting Forgotten
Out of all the Grass-type Pokemon to be presented to you, Bulbasaur is often the one that gets left out. With the original games featuring Charizard and Blastoise as the canon partners for Red and Blue, it’s rare to see Venusaur being the main on someone’s team.
Bulbasaur has the right to be the saddest Pokemon in the room. After all, it was originally meant to beProfessor Oak’sace for an unreleased showdown in the original games. So, not getting picked and having that alternate path cut from the game would make anyone sad.
