Summary
One of the biggest joys of doing any run throughBaldur’s Gate 3is deciding which companion you might be interested in romancing. Some players, myself included, will literally start a run with the idea that ‘this is the Lae’zel run’ or ‘I’m going to let Astarion bite me this time.’ Whatever your personal preference, picking a companion to romance is half the game’s charm.
But every companion definitely has red and green flags in terms of dateability and personality types. And, they also have beige flags, or totally neutral personality traits that don’t really fall into either category. Let’s investigate their beige flags.
10Astarion
Sarcastic
For some people, sarcasm might be a green flag. For others, it’s a very obvious red flag. Whoever you are, sarcasm in a partner or a companion can go one of two ways. And, for that reason and that reason alone, we’re calling this a beige flag.
Ultimately, sarcasm is a neutral quality. It’s not inherently good or bad to have a bit of a sarcastic edge to you; it just depends on whether or not your partner likes that or not. For me personally, that goes straight into the green flag territory, but to each their own, I suppose!
9Gale
Overly Articulate
Some people love a yapper, and others hate to see a yapper coming. Gale is probably the most articulate and well-spoken companion you can acquire in Baldur’s Gate 3. Some might find this attitude a bit pompous, but others might find they love someone who can communicate openly and honestly.
Personally, given the fact that Gale has plenty of red flags (i.e., the fact that he’s literally a ticking time bomb), I would say a slightly arrogant attitude counts as a beige flag in my book. After all, maybe he just talks a lot because he’s running out of time.
8Karlach
Hedonism
It’s pretty commonplace for a lot of members of the party to want to celebrate after a battle well-fought, but perhaps none like the celebration as much as Karlach. Typically, when you talk to her after the gang progresses their quest, she’ll invite you to a drink, or a swim, or any kind of fun she can manage.
While I think overall this is a relatively positive quality, some could definitely view it as hedonistic, which isn’t always that favorable. Ultimately, I think of this as a pretty neutral quality. If someone wants to celebrate with some partying, I say let them, even if it’s not really for you. There’s nothing morally wrong with it; it’s just a quirk that Karlach has that distinguishes her from the rest of the group.
7Lae’zel
Blunt
Like a lot of the other beige flags on this list, this is a quality that some people might love, and others might absolutely revile. But, we can all agree that, when it comes to Lae’zel, she tends to be a pretty straight shooter. Some might even call it blunt. Ultimately, this quality can take on a ton of different vibes depending on how you feel about it.
I personally prefer honesty in relationships, even if someone can be a little harsh sometimes. It’s better than being duplicitous, right? But, some people might find Lae’zel’s candor a bit much sometimes. She can veer into straight-up-rude territory. But ultimately, beige flags are in the eye of the beholder.
6Shadowheart
Private
If you’ve ever had a super-close friend in your life, with whom you share everything, you might already know about the difference between something being private versus something being secret. Shadowheart often toes this line perfectly. She might seem secretive to some people, but ultimately, given her backstory, she’s really just a more private person.
Plus, frankly, a huge red flag in a person can be oversharing too soon in a relationship. Someone who has some private aspects to their personality can be a good thing. Of course, that can end up feeling too secretive, but ultimately, being private is much more of a beige flag than a red flag.
5Wyll
Playful
Depending on your age or phase of life, you might find playfulness a bit immature in a partner. Or, if you’re not really ready to settle down just yet and retire, you might feel like someone who’s too serious about everything is a bit of a downer. Much like Shadowheart and her private inner life, Wyll toes the line well between being playful and serious. Though he can definitely veer on the more playful side, particularly if you choose to romance him.
Ultimately, while this quality could be perceived as good or bad, depending on who you are, a playful, youthful energy in a partner isn’t a good or a bad thing; it just is. This makes Wyll’s spirit of play his strongest beige flag.
4Halsin
Outdoorsy
At one point in your life, you have to make a very important decision for yourself: am I an indoor cat or an outdoor cat? Some of us can straddle the line between the two with grace, but ultimately, most of us come down on one side or another. We either prefer our time inside, or can’t wait until we can hit the hiking trails and get out among nature.
However, Halsin proves that, no matter your proclivity, loving the outdoors or not, is ultimately a beige flag. Clearly, as a druid, Halsin is a big fan of the natural world. But his desire to protect it, which is more of a green flag, falls to one extreme, whereas just a general love of nature can’t really be morally good or bad. Again, it just depends on whether you want someone to be the same kind of cat as you, or if you’re comfortable having an indoor-outdoor hybrid relationship.
3Jaheira
Never Surprised
Jaheira is one of those rare people who really can’t be shaken up or vexed by anything that comes her way. She’s seen it all. She’s worldwise and stable, which are both very good qualities to have in a companion or relationship. However, being always prepared does create a kind of beige flag in her, too.
She can’t really be surprised by anything, which can make her seem a bit emotionless at times. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should want someone who’s always getting thrown off their game or knocked off their balance, but it can be a downer to be with someone who’s a bit too steady in some ways. Ultimately, we’re writing this off as a beige flag. Just don’t try to throw Jaheira any surprise birthday parties.
2Minsc
Enigmatic
Minsc is actually the only companion on this list that can’t technically be romanced in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, because he is recruitable if you have Jaheira in tow, we’re including him on this list as well. Minsc is a bit of an enigma, honestly. He’s loyal to Jaheira and relatively strong-willed, but it’s also questionable if he’s so loyal just because he’s not necessarily the brightest bulb in the box.
At the end of the day, we have to respect his commitment to doing good in the world, even if his reasons for doing so and his overall value system prove a little out of reach. Being enigmatic by virtue of being a bit less dynamic of a companion creates a net-neutral beige flag in our heads.
1Minthara
Doubtful
Frankly, Minthara is basically all red flagsin my book. Unless, of course, you’re into that sort of thing, namely, her whole general vibe of cruelty and mischief. However, if you do try to romance Minthara, you will learn that she sometimes doubts her choices.
Doubt can be a good quality in a person, or it can be an all-consuming quality that forces them to never decide for themselves. Either way, as long as it’s dealt with in moderation, doubt isn’t so much a flaw as it is a factor of someone’s personality to keep an eye on: the ultimate beige flag.
