Wuchang: Fallen Feathersis a soulslike, and a pretty tough one at that, meaning that any advantage you can gain while playing could make a huge difference to the outcome of some fights. It also doesn’t do a great job at explaining some things, with plenty of things you can overlook or misunderstand, so here are a bunch of tips and tricks you’ll want to know before you dive in.
Try And Stay Aggressive During Fights
Boss fights are obviously a huge part of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and there’s quite a lot of variety in how you’re able to tackle them. However, one thing that should stayrelatively consistent throughout all of them is how aggressive you are.
Every enemy in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has what is essentially a stagger meter, which will fill if youconsistently deal damage. You can see it in the center of enemies when locked onto them, and once filled,it will leave them open to a powerful Obliterate strike. You can get some hits in, perform the Obliterate strike, and then hit them more while they’re recovering to do significant amounts of damage.
Get Sword Counter And Clash Skills As Soon As Possible
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has very dodging-focused combat, but there are certain enemies that areeasier to take down with some good, old-fashioned parrying. In fact, some bosses feel like parrying is almost mandatory, but the gamedoesn’t give you a parry ability straight away.
You’ll want to grab your parry as soon as possible, which is titled ‘Sword Counter’ on the left side of the Longsword tree in the Impetus Repository, just so you have more options in boss fights. Similarly, any skill that gives your attacks the Clash effect are worth grabbing too, as you’ll take significantly less damage when trading blows with enemies.
Use All Of Your Healing Items
Some of the gauntlets between shrines in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers can be pretty brutal, and the game isn’t particularly forthcoming with the amount of Manna Vases you get. However, it does throwa lot of secondary healing items at you as you explore.
Steamed Bunny Buns, Health Pills, Raven Pills, and Special Pillscan all be used to recover health, andshould be prioritized when you’re fighting the chaff. Everyone takes a solid whack or two here and there, but it’s worth using the less potent healing items first, and saving your Manna Vases for the tougher fights.
Grab As Many Health And Stamina Upgrades As You Can
One of the first things you’ll learn while playing this game is thatenemies can hitreally, really hard. You’ll also probably notice that your actions take up a lot of stamina, and when combined with Wuchang’s dodge-heavy combat, you’ll find yourself out of stamina a lot more often than in your common soulslike.
These problems can be somewhat mitigated byaiming for Vitality and Endurance upgrades in the Impetus Repository. Certain weapon trees will have more Vitality and Endurance upgrades than others, and if you feel like you don’t have enough stamina or health, it can be worth going down another weapon’s skill tree just for the stat boosts.
Some weapon trees are focused on certain stats more than others. For example, the Dual Blades tree has a lot more Endurance upgrades, so it’s always worth experimenting.
Always Check For Traps
Getting ambushed in a soulslike is just a staple of the genre, butWuchang loves trapsmore than Wile E. Coyote, and some of them are just as absurd. If there’s an item lying on the ground in a small clearing, chances are there’s something there waiting to pounce.
You’ll encounter gremlins hiding behind corners, enemies hanging from the ceiling, mines buried in the snow, living trees buried underground, and a lot more. If you’re running around trying to find the next boss to clobber, make sure you always stay vigilant, andkeep your health topped up for when you inevitably spring a trap or two.
Don’t Be Afraid Of Your Inner Demon
If a game tells you your Madness is increasing and your Inner Demon is about to pop out, you would understandably assume that’s a bad thing. While it sounds nasty, having a high Madness level can actually be very usefulin some situations.
Not only does it increase your attack, but having a Madness level of over 90 percent will alsomake certain skills more potent or give them additional effects. For example, Longsword’s Blink Kick ability restores stamina when your Madness level is above 90 percent, and One-Handed Swords will give you more Skybound Might.
Just remember that Madness has downsides too,as you’ll lose more Red Mercury upon death and take more damage. It’s a balancing act, but one that can give you an edge in battle.
Pay Attention To How Much Red Mercury You Have
Wuchang differs slightly when it comes to leveling up, in that you have toturn your Red Mercury into Red Mercury Essence, which you then spend on skill and stat boosts. It’s a little needlessly complex, and it can be difficult to tell when you have enough Red Mercury to turn into a Red Mercury Essence.
Thankfully, the game has a helpful little tell for when you can level up that isn’t immediately obvious. In the top right corner, the red circle next to the amount of Red Mercury you have will glow goldenwhen you have enough to turn into a Red Mercury Essence. If you see that golden icon, start making your way to a shrine, or start being a little bit more careful when out and about.
