FromSoftware loves introducingmysterious itemsand NPCs to its games without any explanation. Sure, cryptic item descriptions give you a clue about them, but you’ll have to know a lot about the game’s lore for you to actually understand them.Elden Ring Nightreignhas many such instances, but the massive shadowy figures you see in the distance are probably the most puzzling of all.

The game doesn’t tell you who they are or why they’re there, but their towering presence sure does build up the eerie setting of Limveld. Thanks to veteran dataminerZullie the Witch(viaPC Gamer), who has uncovered many of FromSoftware’s secrets, we now know a bit more about the shadow giants of Limveld, and they’re much taller than you think.

Nightreign’s Shadow Giants Are The Tallest Beings In Elden Ring By Far

Given their mysterious nature and massive size, Zullie delved into the game’s source code to understand more about these shadow giants. Over the course of your run, these giants will evolve from shadowy figures to wooden husks. A spectral tree grows from their body, as if to resemble a nervous system, reaching all the way to its head.

However, the most impressive thing about these giants is how tall they are. At about 3,450m, they are nearly as tall as the Erdtree itself. Even the giant creatures whose skulls are found around Caelid wouldn’t measure up to them. Considering all of this, these shadow giants are the largest creature in any of FromSoft’s Souls games.

“I knew the giants were big, but I was honestly amazed at just how much larger they are than any other creature before them,” said Zullie. “It’s kind of nice that they thoroughly outclassed the Caelid giants, because there was a lot of guesswork involved in figuring out how big they were and so it felt awkward to put them on top of the rankings.”

Unfortunately, we still don’t know what exactly they are, or what purpose they serve in Nightreign’s Limveld. However, smaller versions of them can be seen near Heolstor the Nightlord. One of the giants also appears in the Dawn ending for the game, turning away from the Erdtree. However, it’s a pre-rendered scene, so not much could be learned from it.
