Elden Ring Nightreignhas divided opinion ever since launch, so much so that it currently hasone of the lowest Metacritic scores a FromSoftware game has seenover the past decade. It’s a similar story when you look at user reviews too, as Elden Ring Nightreign issitting at a user score of 6.4 on Metacritic too.
However, there is one place that Elden Ring Nightreign has been getting a lot of love, and that’s on Steam. It’s currently sitting at a user rating of Mostly Positive, and is actually now reviewing better thanShadow of the Erdtree, a DLC which some consider to be one of the best ever made, and was routinely nominated for awards towards the end of 2024.
This was first spotted byReddit user Offisapup, as if you look atElden Ring Nightreign’s SteamDB page, you’ll see that the game has a rating of 77.69 percent, with 78.61 percent of the game’s Steam reviews being positive. In comparison,Shadow of the Erdtree has a SteamDB rating of 69.66 percent, with 70.29 percent of its user reviews being positive.
It’s worth noting that Shadow of the Erdtree does have over 10k more user reviews than Nightreign, but it’s difficult to imagine the swing being large enough even if the difference was eventually made up. It’s pretty surprising given that Elden Ring Nightreign is primarily a multiplayer game and naturally invites more problems, but you can begin to understand why this has happened when you look at Shadow of the Erdtree’s Steam reviews.
More recently, Shadow of the Ertdree has been catching some flak for its difficulty, with complaints about hard-hitting bosses and the empty open world included in quite a few of them.Elden Ring Nightreign may have its issues, but it’s definitely not the most difficult game that FromSoftware has put out, especially if you’re in a group that knows what it’s doing.
It’s also possible that Shadow of the Erdtree’s nomination for Game of the Year in 2024 may be dropping its review rating a little bit,as there was some pushback from even Elden Ring fansover whether it deserved to be there. In any case, it’s nice to see that Elden Ring Nightreign is getting the plaudits it deserves now that people are getting more familiar with it.
