Summary
Over three years ago, we embarked on our journey of The Lands Between inElden Ring. We were blown away by the sheer vastness of the land, after which we were promptly crushed by the Tree Sentinel or ridiculed for being maidenless. Good times! However, nothing could prepare us for the first time we found an elevator to the underground.
It was then we realised that besides the huge overworld of The Lands Between, FromSoftware also created a massive underground section filled with its own secrets and lore. Through the dark and twisted tunnels we eventually stumbled upon one of Elden Ring’s biggest mysteries, the massive skeletons sitting on thrones.
Elden Ring Fans Are Still Unsure Of The Giant Under Ground Skeletons
We all thought that skeleton was going to wake up to initiate a boss fight, but the fact that it stayed dead made us ponder even more. There have been plenty of theories over the years, but most of them are assumptions based on cryptic item descriptions or datamined content. Over three years after launch, fans are still hoping for a definitive answer.
We’ve seen many theoriessince then, but never one that sounds definitive. Even today, fans are asking the community if anyone has figured this out yet. Some theories suggested that they were attempts at catching Godwyn’s soul in a new body to resurrect him.
“Gowry canonically calls the Sellians the descendants of the Eternal Cities, implying that the city was founded by Nox who managed to avoid being buried along with the cities,” said one of the comments. “So the fact that they built the big chair (tellingly called a Chair-Crypt, according to the Site of Grace) but it doesn’t have a body in it implies that whatever the giant corpses are is unique to the cities themselves, and not something that could be recreated above ground.”
It would be out of character for FromSoftware to actually explain something from one of its Souls games. However, if the studio were to make an excerption, this would definitely rank high on the list of questions we’d ask Miyazaki.
