One of the worst-kept secrets in modern gaming, a remake ofAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, the 2013 entry in the largerAssassin’s Creedfranchise fromUbisoft, reportedly nearly landed voice actor Matt Ryan in some serious legal trouble.

As first spotted by Insider Gaming, appearing at a recent convention, Ryan, who provides the voice of Edward Kenway, was asked once again about the remake, only to reveal the situation he found himself in without his consent.

“I don’t know,” Ryan said when asked if a remaster was comingbefore sharing more about what happened after his initial comments went viral.

“Well, the thing is that when that happened, someone was (recording) and I was being very free and open,” Ryan said. “But I didn’t know they actually were recording me on their phone. Then the company threatened to sue me. So I say nothing.”

It doesn’t look like Ryan is in any sort of actual trouble, though his situation does show the perils of being candid without consent.

The Black Flag Remake Rumor Mill Has Been Churning For Some Time

Originally dating back to 2023,the remake has been the source of constant rumors in the time since then. The remakewill reportedly feature “new systems,“and it apparentlyisn’t the only game that Ubisoft would like to remake from the AC series.

Earlier this year,a PlayStation Store listing seemed to hint that an announcement for the remake could be happening soon. Those rumorswere then heightened by some rather cheeky teases on social media.

If all that wasn’t enough,a toy maker even joined in on the rumorsbefore Ryan threw his hat in the ring with his own words, which, as we’ve learned, were filmed without his consent. All that is to say that a Black Flag remake has been discussed plenty, even before Ryan landed in hot water, and is likely to continue to be discussed.
