In the lead-up toDying Light: The Beast’s release, developer Techland has been keen on revealing as many details as possible about how the DLC turned full-length game came to be. To start,The Beast was made in response to the massive leaks that the developer experienced ahead of Dying Light 2’s release.

Elsewhere, while The Beasttechnicallyisn’t Dying Light 3, Techland is treating it as such, which should bode well for when the game does release in August. Now, it appears that the developers turned to an unlikely source for inspiration — a classic arcade game.

Pac-Man Truly Is Scary When You Think About It

In a new interview with Famitsu, andas translated by Automatonandcited by GamesRadar, franchise director Tymon Smektala revealed that The Beast, and in particular, its “Beast Mode” power for Kyle Crane, was inspired by … Pac-Man.

Yes, you read that right. The 1980 arcade classic is a major inspiration for how The Beast will play come August.

“You may be a little surprised, but we got the idea for Beast Mode from the classic game Pac-Man,” Smektala revealed. “I think of Pac-Man as a survival horror game in a way.”

That actually makes some sense. Pac-Man is perpetually chased by Ghosts, and through a power-up can then turn the tables on the Ghosts, but only for a limited time.

“We were conscious of that feeling when we created Beast Mode in this game,” Smektala added. “The player, who was the one being chased, releases his anger and activates Beast Mode, and suddenly becomes the one who mows down the zombies.”

And just like in Pac-Man, you won’t be able to be The Beast forever, and the roles will flip once more. Pretty neat when you think about it, and it’ll be fascinating to see the mechanic in action and how players respond to it.
