Even withDying Light: The Beastcurrently on the docket, with its August release date rapidly approaching, developer Techland still can’t help itself from returning to the game that started it all —Dying Light.
Recently, the developer pushed its “Dying Light Retouched” updatelive in honor of the game’s 10th anniversary. But while Techlandwants people to think of The Beast as Dying Light 3, the studio also doesn’t want the “Retouched” update being called a Remaster or anything similar.
Remastered, Reimagining, Remake And Now Retouched
To start, “Dying Light Retouched” brings higher-resolution textures, upscaled skies and clouds, plus “ultra” shadows to go along with a fully remastered soundtrack, according to a release on the Dying Light website.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve added a lot, customized a lot, and learned how to squeeze more from the tech we already have,” technical game director Grzegorz Świstowski said (hat tip to PC Gamer). “One day, someone just started applying those learnings to some old assets — and it just clicked that we could do that across the whole game.”
That sounds a lot like a “Remaster,” but it’s not, or at least don’t call it that.
Franchise director Tymon Smektała said his “heart skipped a beat” when he saw the online discourse surrounding the update. “Quite a few of you were expecting a full remaster of some sort,” he said.
“So, let’s set the record straight: the Retouched update is about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster.”
That probably won’t stop people from calling it that, and it’s odd that a new word to describe an update has been introduced. However, such is modern gaming. Welcome to the Retouched era.
