Summary
WhenDoom: The Dark Ageslaunched last week acrossXbox Series X|S,PlayStation 5andPC, one thing that became immediately clear was the low number of concurrents onSteam. As TheGamer’s Sam Woods reported at the time,The Dark Ages peaked at about 30,812 players on launch day, which is a far cry from the 104,891 players that populated Doom Eternal back in 2020.
In the time since then, the game has only managed to top 31,470 concurrents, a 658-player increase, according to SteamDB. It turns out, the game isn’t just struggling on PC, as things on thePlayStationside aren’t looking too hot either, according to multiple analysts.
Doom: The Dark Ages Is Experiencing Some Dark Numbers Right Now
To start, the official Bethesda social media account shared that The Dark Ages topped 3,000,000 players, though it’s worth noting that the figure doesn’t mean that many sales.
Rather,as first spotted by Push Square, it’s believed that over 2.2 million of those players have experienced the game through Game Pass. An additional 400,000 copies have reportedly been sold on Steam, with PlayStation having a paltry 200,000 copies sold, per Alinea Analytics.
Meanwhile,The Game Business is a little bit softer on projections, estimating that 500,000 copies have been pushed on PlayStation. That’s a bit better than the estimate of 200K copies, though a little weak overall.
Together, the numbers help create a picture of a game that is struggling to sell full-priced copies outside the Xbox ecosystem. With Microsoft moving toward $80 games, those numbers could potentially look bleak come the fall for whatever title comes next.
