Summary
Id Softwareis the gift that keeps on giving. Instead of just making more Doom, every new entry is an evolution of the 2016 title. While the first game in the new series had us run and gun,Eternalhad us play combat chess, and now,The Dark Agesmakes us stand and fight. The new combat mechanics makesthe Slayergo head-to-head with some of the biggest demons hell has to offer, and instead of strafe-shooting, he stands his ground.
The developers have given us various tools to rip and tear however we like. The key is knowing which tool to leverage in the right situation. Parrying is the main way to open up an enemy’s defenses, but what you do after that is what really matters. It seems this formula is a bit harder for fans to figure out, resulting in many saying it’s the hardest game in the series.
Doom: The Dark Ages Players Are Having A Hard Time Ripping And Tearing
Over on the Doom subreddit, players have been discussing how the new game is the most difficult one yet. “I’ve been playing through Doom: The Dark Ages and I am STRUGGLING. I don’t understand what it is that makes it so hard I really don’t.” said oneRedditor. “I’m doing it on Ultra Nightmare at 200% speed since I heard it’s the easiest game and it’s much slower than Eternal. I highly disagree I do not think it is slow I just think people aren’t being creative enough with the shield/melee combat. That being said, I have never died so much in a video game.”
It seems that adapting the new techniques the game offers is much harder than the trailers made it look. Eternal’s system of attacking the right enemy with the right weapon had a lot of people complain about how it breaks the flow, but with The Dark Ages, it seems players aren’t sure why they’re struggling.
“It brings back the panic mode of trying to find that health pack you saved while being chased by an angry demon,” said one comment. That or trying to find the nearest fodder enemies to shield bash for every sliver of health you can get"
“I honestly think the lack of glory kills makes it a lot harder on higher difficulties,” pointed out another. “You don’t get that breather as often as in Eternal. Now eternal was a very hard game in its own way, but TDA is definitely no slouch.”
It seems the sheer number of options and the open world is wearing players down rather than one single difficult enemy.
