Summary
Doom: The Dark Agesis set quite a way back before the events of the modernDoomseries, and while that has led to some little continuity errors -such as where the heck the Doom Slayer’s Buzzsaw Shield went- it does also have fans looking at developer Id Software’s Doom games a little bit more closely, most notably,Doom Eternal.
In fact, one fan reckons that Doom: The Dark Ages may have revealed a key plot point in the series going forward, and if you’re still trying to avoid spoilers at this point, this is your one and only warning to duck out now.
Doom: The Dark Ages May Have Hinted At A Plot For The Next Game
First noted by a Reddit user called Forsaken-Outside2979, it seems as though Doom Eternal features various large tentacles that also feature in Doom: The Dark Ages. In Doom Eternal, these tentacles dangle from the sky and stick out of the ground, just like they do in the Cosmic Realm in Doom: The Dark Ages, and some fans reckon this is proof that Hell and the Cosmic Realm are still allied during the events of Doom Eternal.
In fact, some users like BlackNexus reckon that Hell may have fully taken over the Cosmic Realm in some kind of conflict that happened between the events of The Dark Ages and the other two Doom games. That would also explain the difference in appearance between The Dark Ages and Eternal, with one set of tentacles remaining in Hell, and another wrapped by the Cosmic Realm.
Either way, it’s an interesting theory, and one that opens up the door to the Cosmic Realm making another appearance in a future Doom game, though there’s the possibility that we may not get one at all. We already know that Doom: The Dark Ages had a lot of players on Game Pass, but it was recently reported that the game sold quite poorly. It remains to be seen whether we’ll even get another Doom game based on that, but fingers crossed we actually do.
