Doomis a cornerstone of the video game industry. It lives on not only via new installments, the latest of which is only two months old, but also because people still want to play the original all these years later. That’s why, in 2025, the OG Doom is being re-released on the Super Nintendo.
Talented Doom fans have spent the past three decades proving the iconic id game can be played on just about anything, froma potato-powered calculatortoa fridge door. However, all these years later, there’s still nothing quite like playing an iconic game on its original hardware. If you happen to have a SNES handy, you’ll soon be able to buy a new, definitive edition of Doom and play through it on a new Doom-themed SNES controller.
Doom is back on Super Nintendo, and it’s better than ever
Doom’s SNES revival comes courtesy of Limited Run Games, which has worked alongside Randy Linden who was responsible for porting the original Doom to the SNES in the 1990s, so the best man for the job. There’s a standard edition for $99.99, ora collector’s edition for $174.99, both of which include a Doom SNES cartridge, an instruction booklet, and a poster.
The collector’s edition’s cartridge is a little flashier, splattered with blood so it looks like the Doom Slayer has been fighting through hell with it clipped to its belt. The more expensive edition’s box is foil embossed, andonly 666 units of this version will be available. That means they’ll sell out fast, and it’s that limited availability that drives the price up.
Neither edition includes the matching SNES controller, you’ll have to buy that separately for $34.99. The controller has been designed to look like it has been forged from the same armor the Doom Slayer wears in the original game, and it’s equipped with two rumble motors. The original SNES controllers never had rumble, which means if you play the re-release on this controller, you’re going to experience the Super Nintendo version of Doom like you’ve never experienced it before.
It’s more than just the rumble that will do that. The re-released game also includes 14 levels that weren’t included on the original SNES release of Doom, along with features that previously weren’t included, such as circle strafing and enemies respawning when playing on Nightmare difficulty.
Pre-orders for both editions of the definitive edition of Doom, along with the controller, open at 10 am EST on Friday, Jul 27, 2025. You will have until Jul 19, 2025, to place your orders, although I suspect the collector’s edition will sell out long before then. As is often the case when buying items from Limited Run, the wait between pre-order and arrival will be a long one. Both editions of Doom on SNES and the controller aren’t expected to ship until February 2026.
