Magic: The Gathering’s latest set, Edge of Eternities, is set to release on August 1, butWizards of the Coasthasalready announcedthat one of the upcoming cards has a misprint that affects the functionality of the card.

Diplomatic Relations is a three-mana green spell that erroneously reads, “Target creature gets +1/+0 and gains vigilance until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature opponent controls.”

According to Wizards of the Coast, the spell’s text should read, “Target creatureyou controlgets +1/+0 and gains vigilance until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature opponent controls.”

This distinction is crucial, because, under the misprinted rules, you may target any creature on the board. For example, should the situation arise, you could select a high-powered creature on your opponent’s board to do damage to another creature, or even itself.

Although the cards have already been printed, every online iteration of Edge of Eternities will have the correct text displayed. Wizards of the Coast has reacted quickly to address the misprint, but you already know that, somewhere out there, there’s going to be a table dispute over the card’s misprinted text.

Edge of Eternities is the fourth set released this year, after Aetherdrift, Tarkir: Dragonstorm and Final Fantasy. Universes Beyond crossovers with Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender will be the final two sets released in 2025, before Lorwyn Eclipsed releases at the beginning of next year.

Edge of Eternities is a space fantasy-themed set, with some proper world building and lore development for the first time in a while. Magic’s noticeable shift towards crossover sets has meant endemic lore has fallen to the wayside.

Wizards released a comprehensive “Planeswalker’s Guide to Edge of Eternities,” a general overview of the lore of Edge of Eternities, and there’s some pretty compelling stuff in there. I certainly wouldn’t be on the bad side of the Uthros Combine and their Illvoi associates.
