Heads up,Pokemonisn’t the only franchise involving cute little monstersto have a game set for release later this year. That’s becauseDigimonis coming out of its slumber forDigimon Story: Time Stranger, the firstnew game in the series in nearly a decade.
That last part is probably the most noteworthy,as outside 2022s Digimon Survive, the franchise has largely been dormant. That’sdespite the anime and TCG continuing to hold strong. However, according to producer Ryosuke Hara, there’s a good reason for the long layoff.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Will Seemingly Have A Next-Level Story
As first spotted by Automaton, the reason for such a long layoff, according to Hara, is due to the game’s narrative. Because while development started after Hacker’s Memory, building out the story took a lot longer than expected.
“We actually wanted to release it sooner, but what took the most time was fleshing out the game’s setting in order to really highlight the game’s central theme: ‘The bond between humans and Digimon,’ as well as building a story and world centered around the Olympos XII,” Hara shared.
Of note is the fact that Hara believes the story can be appreciated by both long-time Digimon fans, along with those who are relatively new to the series. “It’s a story that can only be told through Digimon, and I think that when players finish it, they’ll understand what makes Digimon so special,” Hara added.
With the narrative taking so long to shape, it afforded the team the ability to craft the single largest Digimon roster in a game to date. Previously,it was reported that the game would have over 450 Digimon, a huge increase compared to the 250 of Cyber Sleuth.
The game has been given an October 3 release date, so it won’t be too long before fans and those curious about Digimon as a franchise will be able to see what is seemingly nearly a decade in the making.
