In case you missed it,Nintendofinally held its long-rumoredNintendo Switch 2Partner Direct on Thursday, andamong the announcements madewas thatOctopath Traveler 0, areimagining of sorts of the mobile title that was known as Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, would be coming to consoles on December 4.

It’s a rather exciting announcement for fans of the franchise. However, just as quickly as excitement was built, things went south when it was later revealed that Octopath Traveler 0 would be on a Game-Key Card.

Nintendo Switch 2 Partner Direct Game-Key Card Edition

As first spotted by GamesRadar, the boxart for Octopath Traveler 0 has revealed that it’ll be a Game-Key Card, with a need to download the 5GB file.

On its own, that’s pretty par for the course when it comes to recent third-party titles on the Switch 2. However, it’s worth noting that there is no way to upgrade to the Switch 2 version of the game if you purchase the Switch 1 copy as a physical games collector.

That bit of info was announced by Square Enix on social media, where the developer also said that there are “no plans for an option to upgrade” to the Switch 2 version in the future.

“Please make sure you purchase the correct version,” the announcement reads.

Oh, andif you are interested in the rather expensive $230 limited Collector’s Edition, that still won’t net you a true physical card with everything on it. You’ll still be stuck with a Game-Key Card, even after shelling out all that cash. All this has created yet another rather unfortunate situation early on in the Switch 2’s lifecycle.
