When Sony first announced the PS5 what feels like an eternity ago, one of its big promises for the new system was faster loading times.The PS5’s SSD drive should feasibly make loading screens a thing of the past, and we’ve seen a lot of games take advantage of barely having to take a second to breathe.
Unarguably,the best example of speedy loading times on the PS5 is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which Insomniac somehow managed to make near-instantaneous.That was even the case when fast-travelling across the map, which made it quite a showcase of the PS5’s power. Well, it took a few years, but we finally have a game that’s one-upped it.
How’s That For A Speedy Delivery?
I am, of course, talking about Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,which just launched this week. Much has already been made about how much better Death Stranding 2 looks than the first game (especially when it comes to Norman Reedus), but it turns out that the real ace up its sleeve is its loading times.
As pointed out by Redditor NecessaryAd6735 on the Death Stranding subreddit, On the Beach loads a ton faster than the original. In fact, it loadsinstantlyfrom the moment you select a save file. NecessaryAd6735 went as far as saying that Death Stranding 2 “has the fastest loading time” they’ve ever seen in a video game.
Astro Bot also had some very fast loading times, but it still pales in comparison to Death Stranding 2. Sorry, Astro.
While it might sound weird to compare two games that have instant loading times, I’m going to go ahead and put Death Stranding 2 on the top of the pile. Spider-Man 2 has you sitting through a bit of an animation when you start the game as either Peter or Miles, and that applies when you fast-travel as well.
Those animations are more likely than not just stylistic choices, but it still counts towards how fast the game lets you play. Death Stranding 2, on the other hand, doesn’t stop you at all andwill jump you right back into the action whenever you load your save file. It took a while, but it finally feels like the PS5reallyis a next-gen machine.
