The opening hours ofDeath Stranding 2have finally revealed the truth behind one of its biggest mysteries - why did Sam have grey hair in the game’s reveal trailer?

As you’d probably expect from a Hideo Kojima game,Death Stranding 2 has a ton of mysteries and plot threads to uncover. While I know we’re all curious aboutwhy the heck Higgs is using an electric guitar as a weapon, perhaps the biggest question is one that surfaced in the game’s reveal trailer.

Minor spoilers for the opening hours of Death Stranding 2 to follow.

Back when Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was simply known as DS2,the reveal trailer mostly focused on Fragile and Lou as they were under attack. As the trailer ended, we got our first look at Sam,who looked a ton older than he did in the first game, despite Fragile appearing to be the same age.

Sam Doesn’t Have Grey Hair For Long In Death Stranding 2

A Shame, Since It Really Suits Him

Since then, the trailers and footage of Death Stranding 2 have shown Sam looking basically the same as he did in the first game, only with even more detail. This raised even more questions about why the reveal trailer showed him with grey hair, which is thankfully answered in the game’s opening hours.

Death Stranding 2’s opening hours show Sam connecting Mexico to the UCA’s Chiral Network, which he manages with relative ease. As he finishes up, though, Lou and Fragile get attacked, and it seems as if Lou is killed. After that, Sam goes into a heavy depression and is shown shooting himself in the head.

Of course, since Sam can’t really die, he repatriates after doing so. It’s implied he does this several times over the course of a month, which leads to him looking much older and weathered after several repatriations. Fragile talks some sense into Sam and recruits him for another mission, which sets up the main plot of the game.

Fans have been discussing why Sam has grey hair in DS2 for months now, with some even guessing that it’s due to him repatriating too much.

Once Sam is on Drawbridge’s ship, he goes to the mirror and gives himself a trim, as well as dying his hair back to its original colour. So, Sam actually does still have grey hair in Death Stranding 2 after repatriating so much - he just hides it with a spray can and a bit of a grooming session.
