Summary

The Papal conclave has convened after the sad demise of Pope Francis last month. Plumes of black smoke have poured out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel a couple of times to denote that there hasn’t yet been a consensus on choosing the next Pope. While the movie Conclave gives us some idea of what goes on during this process, a Spanish television channel has presented the process in a way gamers will understand.

Spanish television channelCuatrohas resorted to a rather unique manner to depict what goes on during the conclave by using aDark Souls 3boss fight. FromSoftware fans might have already guessed that the boss in question is Pontiff Sulyvahn, as the fight takes place in the Irithyll Cathedral.

So That’s What Goes On During The Conclave

During a segment on the election process, the presenter talked about how predicting who the next Pope has almost become a game. “The prediction markets are going viral these days in Italy. If we were to imagine a conclave with a videogame aesthetic, it could be this battle for the throne of St Peter,” said the presenter, via Google Translate (thanksPC Gamer).

While there are a lot of ways to represent the Conclave in video games – The Sims 4, perhaps – you wouldn’t think Dark Souls 3 would be the one they’d choose. The outfit and arena is on point though.

The segment also showcased a clip of Fantapapa – loosely translating to Fantasy Pope – a fantasy sports game where you get to predict who the next Pope will be.

This isn’t a case of an ignorant news channel unknowingly using game footage. The Pontiff Sulyvahn boss fight was specifically chosen because of its Cathedral-like arena. What’s more? We know that someone from the news channel deliberately recorded this footage, as the player is dressed in vestments that look rather papal.

They even showed a sick move where they threw a fireball at Sulyvahn in mid-air. I’d personally vote for the cardinal who can do that. I suppose the fireball also explains all the smoke.
