Summary
There are so many things you can learn from video games. Over the years, games have taught us about history, socio-political issues, and even how to fly.Assassin’s Creed Originseven had an entire teaching tool for ancient Egypt. Languages are another thing that games can teach us, andClair Obscur: Expedition 33is giving us French classes.
The game’s post apocalyptic depiction of Paris is beautiful as it is horrifying, and the French influence permeates through the entire game. Characters' names and even certain words are evidently French. However, it seems one cuss word has really stuck with fans of the game. You guessed it – Putain.
Cair Obscur Game Everyone A New Favourite Cuss Word
The word ‘putain’ is a derogatory way to call someone a prostitute. While we don’t hear it much in Lumiere, we hear it a lot from the expedition members when they’re fighting Nevrons on the continent. It seems the word has become quite popular after the launch of the game. I don’t mean just as a meme, people are actually looking it up.
According toGoogle Trends, the number of searches for the word ‘Putain’ has significantly risen after the launch of Clair Obscur. As you may see in the chart below, the Interest Over Time for the word goes on an upward arch just around the date the game launched – April 24. It begins rising between April 20 and 26, and peaks somewhere between April 27 and May 3. It seems the word is becoming more popular thanks to the game.
However, if you think this is some kind of freak coincidence or aren’t convinced that it’s because of the game, there’s more proof. The Related Topics and Related Queries segments have the game’s name in it. It’s pretty conclusive that Clair Obscure is the reason for the word’s rise in popularity.
While we’re all throwing around our new favourite cuss word, it seems the english voice cast had a tough time with it. Gustave and Maell actors Ben Starr and Jennifer Englishadmitted that they kept tripping up over the pronunciation of French words and names. English even likened it to the scene in Friends where Phoebe tries to teach Joey French.
