Clair Obscur: Expedition 33does a great job in making each character’s moveset unique. Gustave’s explosive arm, Maelle’s swordsmanship, Lune’s mastery over the elements and Monoco’s obsession with feet are all completely different and require varying tactics to be fully effective. Then there’s Sciel.
You may not know this, but you firstencounter Sciel on Gommage day as one of the dancers at the docks. However, you unlock her character only once you reach the Gestral village. Upon beating her in trial combat, you can add her to your party and leverage her unique powers of… I really couldn’t tell you.
Many Players Still Don’t Understand Sciel’s Powers
Clair Obscur does give you a tutorial for each character, but the problem is that they start getting more complicated with every new addition to the party. So when the text pop-ups for Sciel’s moveset popped up, many players probably thought it was too much to read, and that they’ll figure it out along the way.
As illustrated byNewtBoyeon Reddit, Sciel’s abilities are so convoluted that many players still don’t understand them. Thankfully, Clair Obscur highlights the most effective attack for each player during every round of combat. That was the only reason I managed to make her even slightly useful.
“I kept her simple as a support. I understand she can do a ton of damage but I never bothered to learn her kit so I ended up using her support skills more than anything,” said one comment. “It took me until act 3 to really understand what the hell she does,” said another player.

Even the players who did figure it out didn’t know how to leverage her powers to the maximum. “On top of all of that, I recently realized that her Twilight mode’s extra damage scales based on the amount of sun/moon charges she has when going into it (+25% for every charge). So it’s even more complicated than it looks!” explained another.
Unfortunately, it seems most players kept her as back up in case their primary squad couldn’t get the job done. “Lol I never did. Just used her occasionally to buff Maelle. But tbf she was in my B team pretty much the whole playthrough.” I have to admit, Monoco and her did make a good reserve squad.
