Summary
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33has been a mega hit for Sandfall Interactive. The French studio’s debut game was so popular at launch thatits physical version sold out everywhere. It might seem wild for the devs behind the JRPG-inspired phenomenon to already be looking beyond Clair Obscur, but that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Sandfall COO François Meurissespoke with Gamesindustry.bizthis week, revealing that some of the dev team that worked on Clair already have ideas for what they want to do next. “There will be another video game, for sure,” Meurisse revealed. However, whether the producer was referring to a Clair sequel or simply a second Sandfall game remains unclear.
Meurisse’s answer about a follow-up to Expedition 33 was almost certainly ambiguous by design. The last thing he and Sandfall want amid the continued celebrations for Clair Obscur is for everyone to start asking when a sequel is going to be here. If there is going to be a Clair Obscur 2, then it’s going to be a very long time until we get to play it.
Sandfall Is Already Thinking About The Studio’s Next Game
Whether It Will Be A Clair Sequel Or Not Is Being Kept Under Wraps
“I can’t wait to dig more into the ideas we already have for the next game,” Meurisse added, being sure to note that it’s far too early to know what form that second game is going to take. Again, leaning into Sandfall’s next game being a Clair follow-up and not necessarily a Clair sequel. “We’ll start from a more efficient position than when we started the company five years ago… I can say that we have – and Guillaume in particular has – great ideas for the next game.”
On the one hand, that sounds like Meurisse is confident that the next Sandfall game might not take five years to develop. On the other hand, the next game from the studio will likely be grander in scale - hard to imagine how, considering the scale of Expedition 33 - which potentially means it will take the same amount of time, if not longer, than Clair to create.
However long it takes, and whether it’s a direct follow-up to Clair Obscur or simply a different game made by the same people, we can expect some of what will become Sandfall’s signature inclusions from the studio’s next game. That includesincorporating “stupid ideas"on the road to ensuring its first game’s success, andthe silliest idea for Expedition 33 being thought up at three in the morning.
