Clair Obscur: Expedition 33is a game so rich in lore that players are still going to be figuring things out years down the line. In arecent interview with us at TheGamer, the game’s narrative lead, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, said the team created a full backstory for every character, expedition, and facet of Lumiere.
One mystery that has stumped players from the very beginning of Clair Obscur’s prologue is the presence of two giant statues of a previously unknown man standing tall over the struggling city. While debate has raged as to who it might be, new concept art has confirmed that it is exactly who we thought it was.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Lumiere Statue Is Verso
First spotted on theExpedition 33subreddit byuser achimas, a new piece of concept art shared onArtstationconfirms that at least one of the statues in Lumiere is that ofVerso. In the statue, a wavy-haired figure can be seen holding an arm aloft, with a sword in their other hand, seemingly wearing an expedition armband. The art, completed by environment and prop artist Mathieu Costat, is titled “Lumiere Verso Statue”, dispelling any other theories.
It’s likely these statues were built following the return of the game’s only semi-successful expedition, Expedition Zero, of which Verso was a part of. Expedition Zero’s return ultimately helped shape future expeditions, so it’s likely Verso would have been lauded as a hero by the people of Lumiere, as they sought to solve their ongoing problem withThe Paintress.
While the artwork clearly points to at least one of the statues being Verso, debate has still raged on the second, which stands directly next to the first. It clearly looks like the second is a mirror image of the first, meaning Verso has a pair of statues at Lumiere’s harbor. However, some feel like the statue represents a second Expedition Zero member, with one of the game’s most difficult optional bosses,Simon, cited as a potential candidate.
This statue revelation marks the latest find in the game’s prologue, following on from somebody recently spottingSciel dancing in the city on Gommage day.
