Update: May 2, 7:00 p.m. PST— Gematsu is now reporting that Horii specifically never said anything about a remake, but rather the interpreter after relaying his translation. Original story is as follows:

Summary

Chrono Triggerfans, rise up! It seems like the 1995 classic JRPG is next in line for the remake treatmentafter years of wishmaking. But don’t take it from us. Legendary developer Yuji Horii, who worked on the game, spilled the beans during a Dragon Quest panel at Comicon Naples.

According to IGN Italia, who was in attendance at the event, “I think I understood that there is also a remake in development,” was apparently said by Horii when discussing the franchise as a whole.

He then said through an interpreter, “You have heard nothing.”

While nothing has been outright confirmed, sources have told TheGamer similar.Horii has been one to spill the beans prematurely before, having also provided a small update on Dragon Quest 12 earlier this year, seemingly unprompted.

Chrono Trigger Has Been A Major Fan Request

The game, which was originally released in 1995 and was developed by Square, has seen its fair share of re-releases over the years, including ports to the Nintendo DS and iOS. Its popularity spawned an entire franchise, including its popular sequel Chrono Cross.

Still, while the likes of Dragon Quest 1-3and other seminal JRPGs,like Super Mario RPG, of its time have received the remake treatment, Chrono Trigger has seemingly been left behind.

Most recently, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Square Enix teased a wealth of plans related to the game, including a “variety of projects” that were not named, but could be related to the alleged remake. The first of its projects was a special stream that already aired on March 14. That said, 2025 is still nowhere close to being over, so buckle up.
