As with all games, the greater the hype, the louder the critical comments, and Chrono Odyssey’s beta test is proving to be in quite a different state than we’d previously seen in the gorgeous preview trailers and promotional content. Over on the game’s subreddit,Reddit user d1z said,“All of this could’ve been avoided had he just said off the jump, ‘Hey, this is a stress test on an old build’.

Players Agree The Gameplay Is Fun, The Polish Is “None”

Fans of Chrono Odyssey have been anxiously awaiting beta codes all week, with many still going out in waves. While the consensus is that the gameplay is fun and the world and lore are interesting, many playersare lamenting on the poor state of optimization, lack of DLSS and FSR frame generation, frequent pop-in and draw distance issues, and overall lack of polish in lighting and animations.

“This is not what I expected… and I don’t think a single person expected this…” said Twitch streamer Shroud. “Granted, I don’t know what we expected but I can tell you it wasn’t this.”

Chrono Studios CEO Bong-gun Bae Responds

The CEO of Chrono Studio, the lead developer for Chrono Odyssey, took to Twitter to respond to fan complaints and let the community know that “the version from the end of last year was the FGT [focus group test] version, and that’s the one we were aiming for at the time.”

Chrono Odyssey is set in a cosmic horror world (think Bloodborne or even Aliens), sometimes referred to as Eldritch Horror. It’s a unique setting for an MMORPG and one we haven’t seen before. Many players are comparing the structure and gameplay toNew World with a sci-fi twistthat allows the player to turn back or go forward in time and offers a very promising concept, although its current state is a little lacking.

On the positive side, the lead developer, Yung Sang-tae haspromised there will be no Pay to Win features, which is a serious concern when it comes to Korean MMOs, as the last few MMOs from Koreahave been heavily criticized for this(Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty, and others).

Interested players can request access to the closed beta testthrough the Steam game page. The studio is planning for a second closed beta test to show off their progress with a newer build and more polished content.
