Thanks to its mountain of crossover properties,Universuscan visit just about anywhere. But the walls of Paradis or UA High School have nothing on its next set, which takes us to a world so strange, so terrifying, and so dangerous, you’ll need a squad of heavily-armed mutants to back you up: New York City.

Though largely based on the Mutant Madness and Rise of the TMNT incarnations of the turtles, the set does borrow from just about every era. It even plays in to more obscure corners of the franchise, such as in these five alt-art cards we’re revealing today that see the turtles hit the streets of New York for real.

Donatello, The Smart One

The Ninja Turtles Go Miniature For Universus' Alt-Art Cards

Headlining the TMNT set are, of course, the TMNT themselves, and all four get the photographic treatment with cards using their retro action figures on the actual streets of New York.

As far as the cards themselves go, they all seem like great beginner-friendly characters to lead your deck with. Compared to recent releases, these are quite simple, with a limited number of attributes per character, and rules text that isn’t super complex.

My personal favourite is Leonardo, The Leader. Whenever you’re blocked, you mill a card and then add one damage to either that attack or the next one, letting you strategically decide whether or not an attack is going to be successfully blocked. Raphael, the coolest turtle, is an absolute monster too, being able to throw your hand away to give a Fury attack +4 damage.

I do also really enjoy Michelangelo, who is built almost entirely around Pizza attacks.

The final card is a teamup of all four turtles, with their combined attributes giving us a very four-centric deck. All of your checks will be at least four, which can easily help you keep playing cards each turn. But it does come with a major downside of only having a hand size of four, which pushes this more into a deck for advanced players. Still, the photo of all four figures on a Playmate Toys' Shellraiser van is totally radical.
