Summary
The last year has seenUniversusexplore the gruesome world of Attack on Titan. First we had Battle For Humanity, which adapted the first few arcs of the manga, beforeOrigins of Powermoved us into the Clash of the Titans, Royal Government, and Return to Shiganshina arcs. Now it’s time for Universus to focus on the final battle of the series. Launching on May 16, Universus is headed to Marley for the Rumblings in Attack on Titan: Apocalypse.
Headlining the set are a whole host of characters on both sides of the war to end all wars, as Yeagerists and the Survey Corps duke it out for the future of the world. Universus has given us 14 of the alternate art cards you can build your next deck around.
Like the previous Attack on Titan sets, some of these character cards can transform. You start the game with the character on its front, human face, before flipping it into its titan form when you meet the requirements.

Annie Leonhart, Awakened

If you have 2 or more backups, your attacks get +2 speed.

Armin Arlert, Power of the Colossus

Reiner Braun, Marley’s Shield

At the start of the End Phase, if there are 4 or more card types among cards in your stage and you have at least 1 momentum, flip 1 rival foundation and you may transform Reiner Braun, Marley’s Shield.
Enhance[Your attack]: Your rival flips 1 foundation.
Armored Titan, Finale
Your attacks get +1 damage for each card type among cards in your stage.
Rival attacks get -1 damage.
ResponseCommit 1 card in your stage: After an attack is played, commit or flip 1 rival foundation.
Art-wise, I think this is my favourite of all three Attack on Titan sets. All of them use art from the manga, but the way they’re placed on the cards here look absolutely stunning in a way the other sets didn’t quite nail. I really dig the colours in Armored Titan and Pieck Finger, and the framing of Mikasa, Jean, and Connie all stand out too.
They’re also fantastic cards to build around as well. Annie Leonhart lets you ramp by using your backups as foundations, before flipping into the Female Titan and turning all those backups into an additional +2 to your attacks' speed for a frighteningly fast and unexpected attack. Meanwhile, Connie lets you hold onto Weapon cards by bouncing them back to your hand instead of discarding them at the end of the turn, reducing your progressive difficulty in the process.
My favourite card of the lot, though, has to be War Hammer Titan. Weirdly, this one isn’t a transforming card like the other titans (perhaps Lara Tybur isn’t aninteresting enough characterto have her own card), but its power is downright terrifying. You can pay health as an enhance effect to bounce attacks back to your hand from discard, and if you go for broke and lose enough of your health your attacks can be buffed up as much as +6. It’s a really cool glass cannon kind of build, wanting you to go down to just two health for the maximum amount of damage.
The art for War Hammer Titan is an infamous moment in the series, when Eren interrupts her magical girl-esque transformation with a fist to the face.
All three Attack on Titan sets for Universus have been pretty excellent, but Apocalypse is shaping up to be the best of the bunch when arrives on shelves later this month. This isn’t the end of Universus by a long shot, though, as we’re still awaiting crossovers with Street Fighter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Guilty Gear Strive later this year.
