Marathon has been delayed. Bungie’s upcoming shooter will now miss its originally intended September 23 release date, and no new date has been provided.

This comes after Marathon was a surprising no-show at PlayStation’s most recent State of Play showcase. It also comes after it came to light thatMarathon contained work that had been stolen from another artist. Bungie launched an investigation into the issue, so it’s possible that this hascontributed to the need for a delay.

Marathon Will Not Launch On June 11, 2025

“Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear,” reads ablog postfrom Bungie, confirming the delay. “We’ve taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we’ve made the decision to delay the September 23rd release.

“You’ll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we’ve made, alongside the game’s new release date.”

The blog post confirms a U-turn - Marathon will have proximity chat.Bungie previously ruled it out, due to fears about it creating a toxic environment.

Bungie also explains what it will be doing with the additional development time, listing aspects of the game that it plans to improve. That includes giving Marathon a darker tone and adding more “narrative and environmental storytelling”. Of course, it includes gameplay tweaks as well, with the developer saying that it will make combat more difficult and rewarding, ensuring that it’s “tense and strategic.”

It’s safe to assume that this is quite a substantial delay, and hopefully, a well-planned one, allowing the devs to make the most of the additional time. Marathon had a specific release date before this delay, not just a vague launch window, so pushing it back without giving us any idea of when we will actually be playing it is a significant move indeed.

With that said, PlayStation is likely more willing to give the devs the time that’s neededafter the disaster with Concord, another live service. In fact, Sony boss Hermen Hulst recently attempted to reassure everyone thatlessons had been learned since then, so this is likely part of that strategy.

Right now, we don’t know if Marathon will be with us in 2025, as the post does not indicate whether or not it has been pushed into 2026. Either way, whenever we’re playing it, Marathon will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
