Borderlands 3didn’t quite capture the same magic as the first two games in the series. Perhaps it was the insufferable streamer duo in place of Handsome Jack, or that the audience grew out of the series' slapstick humour, or even themere presence of Claptrap, butdespite how Randy Pitchford feels about it, Borderlands 3 was undoubtedly a low point for the series.
In fact, Gearbox appears to be owning the fact now, as hinted at in the latest character trailer forBorderlands 4. The recently released trailer gives us a glimpse at the life of Vex before she became a Vault Hunter and how she got her Sire powers. In typical Gearbox fashion, the trailer wasn’t afraid to make fun of Borderlands 3.
Even Gearbox Doesn’t Think Borderlands 3 Was All That Great
The trailer shows Vex working at a gun shop, which also sells some other stuff. Looking absolutely bored on the job. However, her spirits are lifted when a guy she evidently has a crush on comes by to buy a copy of the movie Deathening 4: Death 4 All. Their little exchange after that subtly bokes fun at the lacklustre performance of Borderlands 3.
“Did you see the third one?” asks Vex, to which her crush replies, “It was okay, Deathening 2: Death to Meet You was way better!” While most of you may have missed this little exchange thanks to the chaos that ensued, longtime fans knew that it was a reference to the third game’s bland reception.
This was followed by a sudden announcement of a Mercenary Sale, resulting in the manager checking himself out, a horde of mercenaries descending upon the shop, and absolute carnage unfolding all around. The stress of this causes Vex’s Siren power to show itself, slicing all of them in half. Unfortunately, her crush was also among them.
The scene then changes to the four Vault Hunters sitting around a fire. It turns out it was a flashback story being told by Vex about how she got her Siren powers and the horrors of working in the retail industry.
