Summary
Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford has tried to explain his recent controversial comments about “real"Borderlandsfans finding a way to pay forBorderlands 4if it ends up costing $80.
Ever sinceNintendo announced that Mario Kart World would cost $80 a few months ago, all anyone in the gaming world can talk about is how expensive each upcoming release is bound to be.While some games like Mafia: The Old Country have bucked the trend, it seems like mostbig releases are now going to be carrying that heavy price point.
The latest game to be included in the big price point debate is none other than Borderlands 4, which many assume is going to cost $80 considering all the talk about its development budget. Gearbox’sRandy Pitchford recently commented on all the speculation about Borderlands 4’s price, but his response wasn’t exactly popular.
Borderlands 4 Boss Shares More Thoughts On “Real Fans” Paying $80
“If You Want The Truth, Here It Is”
As you no doubt have heard by now, Pitchford responded to a comment on Twitter asking him not to make Borderlands 4 so expensiveby saying that “real fans” would find a way to pay $80 for the game if they wanted to. This was a very unpopular reaction to the price point and one that’s gotten Pitchford under a lot of heat in the past few days.
Pitchford’s original comment was actually from a few weeks ago, so I imagine he wasn’t expecting it to flare back up as wildly as it has. In response to the controversy,Pitchford has attempted to defend his comments by showing “the truth” about the whole situationfrom a recent Borderlands 4 Q&A.
In the video,Pitchford is asked a “tough” question about Borderlands 4’s price point, which he responds to by saying, “I’ll tell you the truth - I don’t know”. Pitchford says that it’s an “interesting time” due to the competitive market and that companies are trying to keep the “price-sensitive” people in mind when deciding these things, despite wanting to sell as much as possible.
While Pitchford’s comments are more collected in the video and sound more sincere, “the truth” of the matter is that he still said that “real fans” will find a way to pay $80.
According to Pitchford,Borderlands 4 has twice the development budget of Borderlands 3, which seems to be the main defence of why the game might end up being $80. Pitchford continues to say that he doesn’t know what the price point is going to be, but that “as artists”, Gearbox wants everyone to have the game, and that anyone who bought the game feels like they got the “better end of the bargain”.
