Everyone dreams of attending a magical school, right? The dream may come in the form of going to class to learn new spells and potions, or maybe training in the art of magical defense. Regardless of your vision, something about magical academies is so intriguing.
In this list, you can check out some of the bestanimeout there that take place in a magical academy. This provides a mix of subgenres, so something on the list is bound to stick out. Who knows, you may even grow to love each option!
This list is presented in no particular order.
8Little Witch Academia
First up, we have Little Witch Academia. If you’ve never watched an anime that takes place at a magical academy, this is the perfect start. In fact, if you aren’t too familiar with anime in general, it still makes a great first option.
This anime follows Akko, who recently began attending the Luna Nova Magical Academyin order to become a witch. Rather than being grossly overpowered though, she’s a bit behind everyone else. Throughout the show, you can watch her grow more mature and make friends, while still keeping her whimsical vibe.
7Mushoku Tensei
Mushoku Tensei starts off as a typical isekai anime with a bit of a mature twist. Rather than being reborn as a child or adult, our main character is literally born as a baby. Now, as Rudeus, he can start over again in a magical world.
In addition to being reborn, Rudeus is quite good at magic. So good, in fact, that he attends a magical academy in the second season of the show. While this isn’t the entire duration of the show, it’s still a great watch.
6The Irregular At Magic High School
Next up, we have The Irregular At Magic High School. This light novel-based anime takes place at, you guessed it, a magic high school. Rather than the typical means of making magic though, this show blends it together with technology.
This comes in the form of the Casting Assistant Device, or CAD. The show itself focuses on a sibling duo, with the brother being incredibly powerful. This doesn’t mean that he’s just a little bit stronger than the rest of the students though; he is lightyears ahead of everyone else.
5Asterisk Wars
Asterisk Wars is a bit more explicit than some other options on our list, but if you are fine with Ecchi, then it may be worth the watch. This show takes place at a magical academy and has a harem twist; the main character is male, while all the supporting characters are female.
The origin of magic in Asterisk Wars is quite interesting, as magic came to Earth in the form of mana, which was contained in a meteor that did an immense amount of damage to the planet. This show is definitely a bit of a guilty pleasure, but it proves to be quite entertaining.
4Rosario + Vampire
Rosario + Vampire isn’t quite a magical academy; instead, it’s an academy full of supernatural creatures. Of course, this could be considered magical, as witches are present as well. Our main characters area regular human and a vampire.
If you can stand a fair amount of fan service, then Rosario + Vampire will be a good fit. Additionally, it’s a bit similar to Asterisk Wars, so if you are a fan of that show, you should definitely check out Rosario + Vampire.
3Mary And The Witch’s Flower
Mary And The Witch’s Flower is an anime movie thatlooks very Ghibli-esque, though it was made by a separate studio that happened to be founded by the former lead producer for Studio Ghibli. In it, the tititular Mary finds a flower that gives her the powers of a witch.
After gaining said powers, Mary is transported to a magical college where the headmistress assumes she is a normal student. Since this is a movie, you can experience all there is to the story in just one sitting. As with Ghibli movies, this movie has great animation and a unique charm.
2The Ancient Magus' Bride
The Ancient Magus' Bride is a unique show featuring Chise, who has lived quite a hard life. After being freed from slavery by a magus with a skull-like head, Chise is now both his apprentice and bride.
Like Mushoku Tensei, not all of The Ancient Magus' Bride takes place at a magical academy. Instead, this predominantly happens during the second season. This means that you’ll need to watch 24 episodes until then, but each one is amazing.
1Tokyo Ravens
Last but not least, we have Tokyo Ravens. This show follows Harutora; although he was born into a gifted family, he doesn’t have the same abilities… or so it seems! Though he is untalented, Harutora still attends a magical academy that teaches onmyoudou practitioners.
There is a lot to Tokyo Ravens, including a whopping 16 main light novels that you can read. Oh, and don’t forget the 15 manga volumes. Overall, Tokyo Ravens is a great urban fantasy that doesn’t quite break the mold, but it will leave you entertained.
