TheBaldur’s Gate 3cast is brilliant. That’s hardly a controversial statement, given all of the awardsand nominations they’ve scooped up between them, but truly, there are so many fantastic physical performances and line deliveries in there.
We would be here all day if we debated which scene showcases these performances the best, but I’m going to go ahead and put forward my candidate:a romanced Karlachtelling her partner that she loves them. However, that does not do it justice. Karlach does not simply say, “I love you too”, she gushes it all out in one word. Please, just listen.
See what I mean? “ILOVEYOUTOO” - I will never forget hearing this for the first time. And it turns out that we have Karlach’s actor,Samantha Béart, to thank for this, as they pushed for the loveable tiefling to confess her feelings like this.
Karlach Says “I Love You Too” Like That Because Samantha Béart Pushed For It
“When Karlach says ‘I love you too,’ I said it ‘ILOVEYOUTOO’- that was me,” Béart toldPC Gamer. “I said, ‘I’m gonna do it as one word. It’s one word! It’s one word!'”
We’re lucky that Béart pushed for Karlach to deliver the line in this way, because it completely fits the character. Karlach is in the absolutely heartbreaking situation of finally being free to live her life for the first time in ten years, andknows that she isn’t long for this world. So, a romance with the player is a chance for her to have something resembling normality for the first time in a decade, like a first love all over again - but it will also be her last. She wants to move quickly, but she doesn’t want to scare them off. you may truly hear the relief in Karlach’s voice here - she wasn’t getting ahead of herself. They love her too! There is nothing wrong with how much she feels. They love her for it.
Sorry, I am a bit of a Karlach fan, if you couldn’t tell. Speaking of Karlach fans, Béart is well aware that we’re all a bunch of freaks, so much so thatthey are not reading the fanfiction we’ve written about the character. It’s on their radar, they’re just not checking it out themselves. Fair enough.
