Jumping, Throwing, And Closing Doors Are Just Three Simple Mechanics Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Love

Over the last few days, anew discussionhas sprung up on the Baldur’s Gate 3subreddit, with players sharing their favorite minor mechanics in the game. This discussion saw players discuss typically mundane skills that have saved their bacon across their various playthroughs.

It’s Time To Close Doors

The thread’s original creator, Idoauselessdegree, shared that by simply closing doors in Act 2, they were able to blitz through battles. “My first run, I never thought to do [close doors] it during the Marcus fight, and it was rough. Infiltrating moonrise,” they said. “however, I learnt my lesson and killed Z’rell and most of the cultists by locking them in rooms without scrying eyes and the final battle in the tower was a breeze.”

Cal_PCGWsharedanother use case for shutting doors, saying, “At the murder tribunal, closing the door stops the death knights from entering the fight, which makes it a lot less taxing. You don’t even need to arcane lock it.”

Simple. Effective.

Shoving And Throwing

I’ve only found time to run through Baldur’s Gate 3 once, and I certainly overlooked both shoving and throwing for large portions of my own personal playthrough. It seems like I shouldn’t have, though.

“Shove! Great to avoid opportunity attacks if you want to move, and it works on companions as well if you want to move them out of a blast radius or out of melee,“saidPotatofriend109. While Potatofriend favored Shove, many others preferred Throw.

“Throw attacks have a disproportionately high hit probability,“saidRabid-Wendigo, and plenty of others agreed. Tcloudsaid, “Throw barbs are ridiculously powerful for that reason,” and Sonofeevil shared a creative use for the mechanic, saying, “I used Karlach to yeet Gale’s dead body at Shadowheart so she would have enough range to cast Revivify.”

SuspiciousLeek4 used it similarly, “I used Laezel to throw dying Tav away from Apostle of Myrkul’s bone chill radius so I could Healing Word her.” That didn’t necessarily go to plan, though, withthe player adding, “The fall damage fully killed her, of course, but it was a neat idea.”

You Can Highlight Items In The Overworld

While the first two mechanics are combat-focused, the third is more exploration-based. TimeturnerJsaid, “It’s very simple, but Alt to highlight items you can collect or interact with. I played about half of my first playthrough on controller before I was fed up and switched to keyboard and mouse, and it took me almost as long to realise that there was a button you could push to highlight items.”

For those not playing on PC, Billie_Berrysaid, “R3 will highlight stuff, and pressing and holding X will do the search radius.” While it might not outright save your life in battle, who knows what useful items you’ll find that could aid you later on.
