Long rests are a major feature inBaldur’s Gate 3. It’s when all our beloved companions are in one (relatively) safe place together, and can banter, romance, fight, and prep in peace. It’s also a requirement for progression, many quests and romance options only move forward during long rests.

However, the problem with this is that you’re tracking multiple quests at any given point of time, so you don’t know which one is going to trigger during your next visit to camp. This is especially frustrating when there are time-bound quests, orwhen you’re waiting for Karlach to approach youbut are only met with Withers explaining something you’re not in the mood for.Even if he does have big naturals.

Too Much Is Hidden Behind Long Rests In Baldur’s Gate 3

Understandably, this can get frustrating, as pointed out byPandamonea_70, who was waiting for their romance with Karlach to progress, only to be interrupted by other events during long rests. “I can imagine Karlach screaming with frustration somewhere in the background,” they said, after listing down all the distractions they were met with.

This sparked a discussion about how the game forces you to take so many long rests for story purposes, even if you don’t want to. “Easily one of my biggest gripes with the game now that we have it in its final state. Too many long rests needed, without knowing you need to do them, and the ordering is all off,” said one comment.

“I wish (and this is something that’s been done in several CRPGs) there was some indicator that someone has a long-rest-required exchange ready; it could be a small exclamation point or carat by their portrait or something,” added another. “It would clue you in to when they show up, and dissolve the assumption that you have limited rests available—something I did on my first playthrough.”

While the cutscenes are great, and no one is complaining about progression during long rests, perhaps Baldur’s Gate 3 relies on it a bit too much. The fact that you require camp supplies for long rests certainly discourages you from taking too many, especially new players who don’t know how that game works.
