It may take some more time to sink in, butBaldur’s Gate 3will no longer be getting any more new content.Larianhas said that it has moved on to its next project.Wizards of the Coasthas moved on as well, announcing thata new game based on Dungeons & Dragons is in the works, developed by God of War and Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen’s Giant Skull studio.

However, what about the formula that made Baldur’s Gate 3 so beloved? It seems unlikely that Wizards will want to just leave it behind. The outstanding success of the game has definitely taught them a few things, which will probably be applied to future projects. In fact, Wizards president John Hight has explicitly said so.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Winning Formula Will Apply To Future Games

Speaking toPolygonatSummer Game Fest, Hight said that there are some undoubtedly big shoes to fill after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. While the upcoming game will be very different, Wizards won’t let go of what worked. “Don’t get me wrong, we are going to do CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3,” he said.

As for the upcoming project, Hight said that Wizards hope to capture the action-adventure aspect that Giant Skull brings in D&D’s fantasy world. “We have 50 years of DMs coming together and creating their own campaigns, and we’ve provided templates for hundreds and hundreds of monsters in D&D,” said Hight.

“The things that form the dreams and the nightmares of people, from gelatinous cubes to owl bears. So it’s really important that any manifestation of them in a game be as good as what’s in our own minds. That’s a tall order,” he continued. “And I think about what Stig and Patrick Murphy did on God of War 3, taking that pantheon of both gods and the crazy monsters from mythology and bringing them to life. It’s like, wow, what if we could unleash them on D&D?”

We’re probably not going to get any new information on this D&D project anytime soon, but it’s good to see that Wizards of the Coast is not averse to going back to CRPGs at some point.
