Summary
There are plenty of colourful characters to come across in Baldur’s Gate 3. From a nasty hag disguised as a sweet old lady, to an actually nice Illithid, there’s no shortage of interesting people in the game. However, there are some that players are split on – whether they’re just annoying or they’re doing their best in these dark times. Rolan is one of them.
You’ll come across the Tiefling in act 1 at the Emerald Grove. With imminent danger approaching, he can be seen arguing with his siblings Cal and Lia about leaving the Grove and heading to Baldur’s Gate to apprentice under a wizard… who you’ll meet later on. However, for an apprentice wizard, Rolan is more powerful than you’d think.
Rolan Has A Lot of Potential
Unfortunately for Rolan, he makes some bad choices with good intentions. This results in a fight where he’s on the side of Lorroakan. That’s where one player decided to take a look at his spells and realised that they’re customised. “I’ve been paying more attention to the combat log and noticed Rolan, my favorite male tiefling, has his own versions of some spells,” said a Reddit post byEmceelilspaghetti. “His Magic Missile can Daze and his Mage Armor is a flat +2.”
It seems the apprentice wizard wasn’t as low-level as we thought. His version of these spells were more powerful than the general ones, suggesting that he could have gone on to become a great wizard. Unfortunately, he picked the wrong mentor; not many players will choose Lorroakan over Dame Aylin.
“They’ve done an interesting job with it though,” elaborated one player. “His magic missile is only one dart, but it can daze and does a lot of damage. His mage armour provides 2 AC instead of 3, but it’s got no restrictions. He’s a gifted spellcaster who hasn’t learned everything yet, and that’s a cool balance to strike.”
“I thought the kind of underlying message here was that he actually is a very skilled wizard, even though his boasts make him sound like a terrible person, and based on various decisions you can put him in quite a good place,” said another comment. It’s clear that he’s made some bad decisions, but he was simply looking after his family.
“Yet another reason I am sad Larian will not be continuing with the series,” pointed out another. “It would be amazing to revisit him later down the line and find that he got some pointers from a certain cheese-loving wizard and has blossomed into a legendary wizard in his own right.”
