Amidst thefantasy roleplaying, hundreds of hours of gameplay, andtons of content, it’s easy to overlook how funnyBaldur’s Gate 3is. The scenes at camp and the banter between our beloved companions can always make us chuckle despite the world-ending threat we face. However, it’s always funnier when the comedy is unintended.
NPCs reacting in strange ways, well-versed players breaking the game, and plain bad luck can end up having some hilarious consequences on your playthrough. Speaking of which, one Baldur’s Gate 3 player was surprised to learn that the NPC they thought was a joke character turned out to be one of the origin characters.
Wyll Keeps Dying During His Intro Fight
Depending on when you come across him, Wyll has the flashiest introduction out of all the companions. He shows up in swashbuckling fashion at the gate of the Emerald Grove to help fight off the goblins. you’re able to later recruit him, and watch his story unfold. However, RedditorIwasdraculamissed all of this as Wyll unfortunately died in the first encounter, making them think it was all a joke.
“I thought Wyll was a joke character,” they said. “When I first started the game I reached the grove and had to fight the goblin’s then Wyll appeared and had this cool ass intro and then when the combat starts he gets f***ing killed on the first turn, so I was like oh that was a funny scripted event and just moved on after the fight never revived him and missed out on his entire story.”
Wyll was never the most popular Baldur’s Gate 3 companion, but this was a low point even for him. It seems a number of players have reported that he tends to die in the first skirmish or is completely missed by new players. “What’s funny is that scene was put in to make him more noticeable since a lot of people completely miss his appearance there and subsequently him in the Grove,” pointed out one comment.
“The devs hated Wyll so much. It’s like they went out of their way to make his ai terrible for the grove fight. He uses arms of hadar (an area of effect spell) on a single goblin and then has a decent chance of getting killed running into the pack of goblins,” pointed out another player.
However, not everyone is of the same opinion about Wyll, “It is absolutely wild how often people claim he gets killed in this opening fight and he has never once gotten even close to death the 10+ times I’ve done it. It’s like thepeople who claim Isobel isn’t suicidal, I have to assume it’s an urban legend,” said another.
