Summary
Rolling the dice inDungeons & Dragonsis what makes the game unique. First-time players might get a bit intimidated by how many different types of dice there are, but veteran players only get more excited the more dice there are. More dice means more damage after all.
But which of these dice is the most fun to roll at the table? We’ve discussed at length, and know that some of our rankings may be a bit of a hot take. However, we feel confident in this ranking of every type of DND dice, based on how fun they are to roll.
7The D100
How Do You Roll This One Again?
The d100, or the percentile die, is probably one of the least-used dice types in Dungeons & Dragons. Most of the time, a lot of DMs won’t even ask players to roll this one. After all, you can just use the d10 to achieve the same effect.
However, this die could be fun if you use it for special rolls like Divine Intervention. However, most of the time, you’re either not going to really be using this die or you’ll be asking your DM how you’re supposed to roll it again. It’s just not all that satisfying in the end.
6The D6
Oh, It’s Just Normal
One of the highlights of any first-time player’s journey through Dungeons & Dragons is having their DM ask them to roll a d6. Veteran DMs know what happens next. The player looks up in confusion. You point out the correct dice to them, and they laugh.
The d6 loses points on this ranking only because, at the end of the day, it’s just a normal die. If you’ve ever played any kind of board game, you’ve rolled a d6 before. And you can put all the bells and whistles you want on it by calling it a ‘d6,’ but ultimately, this one’s nothing to write home about.
5The D4
No, Seriously, How Do You Roll This One?
Moving up on the list, we have the d4, which, much like the d100, often gets a lot of questionsfrom first-time players. This die gets bonus points on this list for its unique shape and comical explanations for how to read it.
However, we can’t really justify ranking it much higher on this list than slot number five. That’s because, most of the time, if you’re rolling a d4, you’re either just adding to a saving throw or doing minimal damage. Most exciting rolls don’t happen on a d4.
4The D8
Your Standard Damage
The d8 is one of the most versatile dice in Dungeons & Dragons. Most classes use the d8 for their Hit Point rolls. A ton of different weapons from all across the equipment list use the d8 for their damage, as do most spells. The d8 is truly the jack-of-all-trades of the DND dice world.
Plus, on the tactile side of things, d8s tend to have a fun roll sound and bounce pattern. They’re surprisingly springy and have probably the most unique shape in the pack. This solid die belongs right in the middle of the pack. We love you d8.
3The D10
Get Those Bigger HP Rolls
The d10 is where things start to get exciting. Like the d8, the d10 has a very unique shape and a very bouncy roll that’s highly satisfying. Plus, there’s something incredibly unique about this die that always manages to get a laugh out of me, as a veteran DM who often DMs for newbies.
When new players roll the d10, they often roll and then look up at you in dismay before quietly whispering, ‘I rolled a zero.’ There’s a delightful moment of contrived sadness before you get to explain to them that, no, they actually rolled a ten! There’s something so delightfully charming about the fact that these dice don’t actually have the number ten written on them, and the alternative was to write a zero. Some d10s have symbols akin to the 20 on the d20, but personally, I prefer the old-fashioned way. It’s much more fun that way.
2The D12
Barbarians Unite!
Powerful martial classes like barbarians get access to d12s for their hit dice. Plus, the most powerful weapons, spells, and abilities use the d12 for damage rolls. There’s nothing quite so satisfying as a non-spellcasting player as the look on your wizard’s face as you prepare to roll multiple d12s to deal damage to an opponent, potentially getting the killing blow.
Thanks to its more circular shape, the d12 is also quite fun to roll just in terms of tactile experience. At the end of the day, the main damage dice you roll, d8s, d10s, and d12s, are all relatively equal, but there’s something special about the sheer amount of damage you can do with the d12 that gives it that x-factor, and a little something extra on top.
1The D20
Did You Expect Anything Else?
What else could we have picked for the top slot on this list? Expected yes, but also extraordinarily accurate. The most fun die to roll in Dungeons & Dragons is, of course, the d20. This die is so iconic, it’s basically the symbol of Dungeons & Dragons in some ways. Of course, when you’re rolling the d20, you’re also likely making an important roll, attack, or skill check that could determine the fate of the game or campaign.
Plus, there’s just nothing as satisfying as getting a crit, and getting to shout out ‘natural 20!’ None of the other Dungeons & Dragons dice packs that same punch. Yes, far and away, the d20 is the most fun dice to roll in Dungeons & Dragons. Even ifyou’re a veteran player, it truly never gets old.
