Falloutwas one of the most popular TV shows of last year. Telling a fresh story that pulled elements from the world building of the iconic game series, we followedVault Dweller Lucy MacLeanas she ventured across the toxic wasteland of America in the aftermath of nuclear disaster in search of her father. Season two has wrapped filming, so fans won’t need to wait too long to see the next season onAmazon Prime.
Until then though,Netflixmight have the answer. Its latest streaming hit, The Eternaut, is being heavily compared to Fallout for its dystopian setting, and has become a massive hit on the streaming service. If you want your Fallout fix, The Eternaut might be the answer.
It has also been compared to Apple TV’s Silo, but that’s a considerably more niche show.
What Is The Eternaut About?
The Eternaut follows a pack of survivors dealing with an alien threat after millions die in a deadly snowstorm. Slowly, they realise the snow and the aliens are connected, and must work together to survive. With the heavy reliance on gas mask imagery, plus the story hailing from a 1950s comic, many read the aliens and snow as a metaphor for a ‘nuclear winter’, hence the Fallout connection.
Since The Eternaut dropped its entire season on April 30, it has been in the top of Netflix’s charts, gathering momentum through strong reviews and viewer popularity. It’s more impressive that The Eternaut has managed this despite being a foreign language show (the Argentinian show is in Spanish), but then Netflix has a lot of experience promoting international hits through the likes ofSquid Gameand La Casa de Papel (which was renamed Money Heist when it became a breakout hit).
Are We Getting A Second Season Of The Eternaut?
Much like Fallout, The Eternaut was quickly renewed for a second season after seeing impressive viewership numbers. It did so from a much more difficult starting position, too - while Fallout is internationally established thanks to the video game series, The Eternaut is based on a Spanish-language comic that ran for just two years in the 1950s. However, it has gained tremendous popularity from word of mouth and Netflix’s own promotion, leading to renewal.
While we don’t yet know the airing date for the new season, there are unlikely to be too many roadblocks standing in The Eternaut’s way. It doesn’t have the mammoth budget orfilming schedule of Stranger Things, nor the extremely booked and busy cast of Wednesday. Therefore, a good bet would be that The Eternaut season two shoots later this year, and airs some time in 2026. If that’s the case, it could drop around the same time as Fallout’s second season, and the two can go head to head.
