Radiation is a dangerous thing, both in real life and in the world ofAbiotic Factor, where you’ll have to deal with alien worlds and their inhabitants practically dripping with natural radiation. It’ll be a constant presence, as you’ll have to rely on these aliens' meat and parts to survive, which means a lot of radiation-filled foods.

These radiation-laced meats are some of the best food you can get early on, and not only will you be ingesting radiation, you’ll have to venture through alien worlds full of it and go through areas contaminated by radiation and radioactive waste in GATE’s facility. If left unchecked, radiation will ravage your character and make them sick.

How To Deal With Radiation

Radiation isone of several debuffsyou’ll have to deal with throughout the game, andnot dealing with it properlywill result inthree progressive stages of the debuff: Radiation Tingle, Radiation Sickness, and Irradiated. Whenafflicted with any of them, it will give you anotice near your Health Barand in theHealth Issues column in the menu.

Early on, you canfind the Lead Vest in Bio Lab D or on the catwalk leading to a Portal World on Level Three, which has five armor and reduces incoming Radiation while worn.

On its own, Radiation’s last two stages can be deadly, but if you have todeal with them while getting attackedby an enemy, it canspell death if you vomitand can’t fight back, especially if you’re playing solo.

Radiation Sickness

Rad Absorption is over 35.

Causes Vomiting, which reduces Hunger and Thirst by 25 percent after each vomit. Effect is removed after vomiting twice, but can be reobtained.

Irradiated

Rad Absorption is over 50.

Theearliest wayto deal with Radiation is totake Iodine Tablets, and they not onlyremove 10 Radiationfrom your character, but also give you theRad Resistance buff, which provides a50 percent resistance to all incoming Radiation for a few minutes.

They have ahigh chance of spawning in every First Aid Kityou can open, and can also befound on their own in locationslike thePortal Entrance to A2 on Level Three.

Pentetic Acid Syringesalso provide the same effect, removing 10 Radiationand giving theRad Resistance buff. These are thefirst renewable sourcesof Radiation removal, as they can becrafted once you reachFirst Aid level four, and only takefour ingredients that frequently respawn.

Youcan unlock First Aid level four extremely easily by either starting with theEpimedical Bionomicist Job, picking the FirstAid Certified Trait, or both, and then crafting some Bandagesseveral times in the early game.

Thenext way to cure Radiation, and the second renewable way, is tofish up Radfishin theradioactive waste at locations like Manufacturing West, and thenbutcher it at the Chef’s Counter.

This always gives youone Green Fish Liver each time, whose effect isequivalent to Iodine Tablets, and thentwo Rad Fish Fillets.

WhileIodine Tablets aren’t as renewable as Green Fish Liver, you can start stockpiling them early from all the Medkits in the Office Section, and the Portal World Rise features Medkits that spawn as well.

Rad Fish Fillets can be used tocook two different meals– Radfish Chowder and Rad Rice Bowl – both of which alsoprovide the Rad Resistance Buffwhile alsorestoring your Hunger and Thirstas well.

The food itemswork best as a preventative measureand a normal source of food, butIodine Tablets,Green Fish Liver, andPenetic Acid Syringeare the only ways to remove Radiation from your character.

Most crates and chests also block at least ten percent of the outward Radiation coming from what’s placed in them, but the Hazard Chest is the best of them all, blocking 100 percent of Radiation from items inside it.

Alongside the Lead Vest, you can also find theHazardous Materials Suit on Level Three, hanging from a locker on thebottom floor of Silo Three, near the door to the Portal. Itgreatly decreases incoming Radiationwhen worn andgoes over your armor, but it doesincrease the rate at which you get thirstyand slightlyslows your movement.
