Upon arriving at the confidential GATE Cascade Research Facility that has had some recent containment issues inAbiotic Factor, you’ll find yourself thrust into combat against alien beings and have to survive using whatever you can find. Researchers are varied individuals, and this is reflected in your ability to choose a Job and Traits.
Your Job determines your background, and if you have any natural affinities to the many different Skills you can gain experience in, while Traits further modify your character with both positive and negative effects. It’s up to you to decide what fits your playstyle best, but we can still give you some tips on what to pick.
Jobs, Explained
There are three parts to character creation:deciding on your character’s appearance, selecting theJob you want them to have, and thendeciding on your character’s Traits.
Your chosen Job gives you somebonus levels towardscertain Skills, the amount ofPoints you start with to use for Traits, and if you’ll get anybonus EXP for crafting certain types of items, such as how the Archotechnic Researcher gains more EXP when crafting construction-type items than other Jobs.
Character appearance is separate from the Job and Trait portions of character creation, as your Job and Traits need to be decided each time you start or join a world, while character appearance carries over.
Jobs alsodouble as a guidetowards whatrole you’re able to excel at if you play in a group, as thebonuses they give for Skillsput you at anearly advantage, especially whencombined with synergistic Traits, though youaren’t forced to play that role.
DifferentJobs can eventually even out their Skill levelsin the mid-to-late game if you focus on leveling them, andno Job has any Skills that cap out at a specific levelcompared to the other, unless you have the Fear of Violence Trait.

Best Job To Start With
Of the Jobs you may pick from, the best choice ispartially determined by what mode you’ll primarily be playing in: singleplayer or multiplayer. WithMultiplayer, you canlearn recipes from your teammatesunless you have the Slow Learner Trait, so thereisn’t as much need to diversify your Skills, but you won’t be able to do that in singleplayer and need a range to succeed.
It also depends onhow difficult you want the game to be, as Jobs withhigher starting Trait Pointsmean you cangive yourself fewer Negative Traits.
Overall, thebest job to start withis theTrans-Kinematic Researcherif you’re going toplay singleplayer, and even in multiplayer, it’s quite helpful.
Its spread ofcombat-focused stats benefits you greatlyas you’llstart dealing with enemies earlyon, and theyhelp bridge the gap between the early game, where you lack a lot of protection, and themid-to-late game, where you’ll have access to better weapons and armor.
One of theearliest weaponsyou can get is theBlunt Damage-dealing Desk Leg, so you’ll haveimmediate benefits from the plus two to Blunt Meleethe Job starts with, and the bonuses toFortitude and Strength will aid you in combat.
You can alsocombine it with the Gardener and First Aid CertificationTraits to getbonuses towards the Agriculture and First AidSkill, as well as extra Bandages and theBasic Garden Plot recipe unlocked at the start, so you can also get ahead-start on those incredibly useful skills.
What Do Traits Do?
Alongside your Job, you may also further customize your character with avariety of Traits, both Positive and Negative. EachJob starts with some Points to spendon Traits, but they’re initially limited.
Positive Traits cansynergize with your Job, giving youadditional levels in Skills the Job already excels at, providing you withlevels in Skills you want to work towardsin the future, or otherbonuses that help with your survival, like temperature resilience or getting thirsty more slowly.
Certain Positive and Negative Traits, such as Inconspicuous and Painfully Obvious, cannot be added to the same characterand can’t be used to cancel each other out.
Themore debilitating a Negative Traitis, themore Trait Points it will give youto spend in return, and thesame goes for Positive Traits, as themost universally beneficial ones, like Fanny Pack, cost twice as much as other Traits.
Youdon’t have to pick any Negative Traitsif you’re fine with the Points you start with, butfor certain Jobs, you’ll have totake at least one,so you canhave more than one or two Positive Traitsmaximum.

The Best Traits For Each Job To Start With
Any Trait can work with any Job, but some of them canbenefit more from certain Traits than othersin the early game, thanks to sharing bonus Skill Levels.
Decathlon Competitor is one of the best Traits in the game, as it works well on any Job since most of them give some extra levels in Strength, and it benefits the Sprinting Skill, which will be frequently used throughout the game.
