It’s beenwell over a decade since BioShock Infinite was released, and if you were hoping to see anotherBioShockgame in the near future, then think again.

According to new reporting from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the unrevealed next entry in the larger BioShock franchise is seemingly in trouble, with plans to undergo a “revamp.” Elsewhere, a remake of a classic BioShock title was also reportedly canceled.

BioShock Is All About Narrative, Which Makes This Update Rather Troubling

In his report, Schreier notes that the next BioShock game, which is being developed by Cloud Chamber, recently failed a review held by 2K executives. Specifically, the group found that the narrative could be improved, which will require a “revamp” in the months ahead.

That’s not the only update, either. Additionally, studio head Kelley Gilmore was reportedly “ousted,” with creative director Hogarth de la Plante being moved into a more publishing-based role. Following these developments, there is a fear that layoffs could be happening.

A statement shared by the company states that it’s “fully committed to ensuring we deliver a BioShock game that exceeds the lofty expectations of our fans.”

“We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future,” 2K Games said in a statement in response to questions posed by Bloomberg surrounding the next title. “Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.”

Beyond the developments surrounding the next BioShock game, it was also revealed in the piece that a planned remake of the very first BioShock title was “shelved” earlier in the year, though a specific reason why development was canceled was not revealed.

All this points to a rather troubling situation surrounding a franchise that has been dormant for a long time.
