Summary
For manyPlayStationfans — including myself — special-editionPlayStation 5consoles are a rather sore subject. Thehighly-anticipated 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Pro quickly sold out and was promptly scalped. Not only that, but Japan was the only place to try and get the console in the hands of actual players, requiring a minimum of 30 hours spent on PSN to even qualify for a chance to buy it.
Elsewhere, the PS5 Pro still doesn’t have customizable side plates, and the ones for the PS5 Slim aren’t compatible. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from taking matters into their own hands. Case in point: this fan who turned their PS5 into a PS2.
The PlayStation 2 Design Has Never Looked Better
Taking to Reddit, user Gokeez showed off their fully customized PS5 side-by-side with a launch day PS2, and the resemblance is uncanny.
There’s the grayscale Sony logo, the multicolored PS button, plus a charge cable that emulates the iconic plugged-in DualShock 2. Pair it with a base black DualSense, and you’re living in 2000 all over again.
Arguably the best part about it is that anyone with some spare time and extra cash can do it themselves. For instance, the era-specific lights are simply vinyl strips that are sold online. Meanwhile,an eBay seller has the grayscale Sony logos, whileanother has the retro buttons.
Elsewhere,Etsy is home to the classic logo vinyls, as well as thecustomized cable covers that make your charger look like a DualShock. The platesare also readily available online, too.
“I suppose I’ll go ahead and add this to the list of things I didn’t realize I needed… This is amazing!“one user wrote in response. We’re inclined to agree. The PS2-themed consolejoins a PS3-themed piece of hardware that a fan created back in February, meaning almost all of Sony’s core console releases have been recreated.
