Magic: The Gatheringcan be a pretty lucrative hobby, as anyone whofollowed The One Ring debacle during the Tales of Middle-Earth crossoverset back in 2023. There are a lot of cards worth ridiculous amounts of money, and with the recent release of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond crossover, that list of cards has risen slightly.
Thanks to there being only 77 in the entire set, pretty much every Golden Traveling Chocobo card is selling for tens of thousands of dollars. For example,a Golden Chocobo sold for a whopping $40,000 last month, and there have been even higher sales ever since. From what I can see fromthe Golden Chocobo Tracker, prices currently range from around $40,000 - $80,000 depending on condition.
Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Golden Chocobo Card Sells For $250,000
There is one significant outlier though. Last month,an Instagram account called AncestralMTGannounced that it had found the 1/77 golden foil Traveling Chocobo card, and had been keeping it safeguarded ever since. Earlier today, that very same card was sold, breaking the record for Traveling Chocobo by selling for a whopping $250,000.
It’s not too surprising that this particular Golden Chocobo broke the standard, given the number it was assigned. Usually, the first and last cards in a serialized run sell for far more than any other version, while numbers 69 and 420 (when applicable) have also historically sold for more than other numbers. Yes, really.
Still, that’s a lot higher than the average sale at the minute. Unfortunately, nobody has come forward with the 77th Golden Chocobo just yet, so we can’t really get a decent idea whether this is just what people think the card is worth, or if it’s just one particular outlier that was bought by a person with far more money than you and I. You never know, maybe you could be the one to pull it?
